A phrase you’ll never hear the best fencing contractors say: “It wasn’t personal, it was just business.”
Did you ever notice how many times bad guys in movies say that when they’re trying to explain why they did horrible things to the good guy’s family?
Is that really supposed to help their situation?
It seems to me that the only reason they say that, is so the good guy can then say… “It was personal to me!”

With fencing contractors, it’s always personal. And the best fence contractors all know it. Eli, at A1 Fence and Gate Repair, has based his entire business model on that simple concept. And he’s not the only one.
One of our favorite fence companies, The Fence Authority operates in Pennsylvania and Virginia. They give the exact advice we give when asked about choosing a fence contractor.
Remember that it’s always personal. In their article What to Look For When Hiring a Fence Company, they mention five very valid points that all fence customers should consider when selecting a contractor to work with. Most telling for us is what they listed as the first item on the list. Check out the full article and see if you agree.
Fencing Contractors: Asking the right questions
When you work with the right fencing contractors, getting your dream fence is easy! There are a few things to look for when you’re choosing a fence company. Specifically, you should ask yourself the following questions:
1. Are they friendly and helpful when you talk to them?
Whether you call on the phone or visiting the location in person, this is one of the first signs you’ll notice. Are they being attentive to your needs? Do they seem annoyed when you ask questions? These are things that might clue you in on how the rest of your experience will go.
2. Is the fence estimate scheduled in a timely manner?
You have lots of things to do, and you don’t have time to wait around. The cost of the project may play a role in your decision, and it’ll also impact how you budget for the project. Therefore, “How much will it cost?” is one of the first things you’ll need to know. Going back to point #1, you’ll also want to pay attention to whether your estimator is helpful and polite.
3. Is the sales process efficient?
Again, you’re busy, so if the sales process is going to slowly and you’re itching to enjoy your brand new fence, that may mean it’s time to move on to another company. They need to be friendly, but it can’t be all talk—the job also needs to get done!
4. Is there financing available if you need it?
Don’t want to pay for your whole fence up front? Understandable! If this is the case, you’ll want to work with a company that has financing available—and just like getting an estimate, this is information you’ll need early on in order to make your decision.
5. Does the fence company use high quality materials?
If you’re investing in a fence, you should make sure it will last. See whether the company offers a good warranty. Most will warranty their fences for one year, but if they’re willing to go beyond that, this is a sign they stand behind the materials they use. It also allows you to feel confident that you’ll have their help even if something does go wrong.
